Thermo Fisher Scientific Scientist Dr. Alexander Makarov Receives Inaugural HUPO Science and Technology Award
GENEVA, Switzerland (September 5, 2011) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced that Dr. Alexander Makarov, its director of global research for life sciences mass spectrometry, has received the first HUPO Science and Technology Award from the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO). The award, which honors Dr. Makarov’s principal role in developing the Orbitrap mass analyzer, will be presented on September 7 at the HUPO 2011 10th World Congress in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr. Makarov, who has authored more than 40 papers and holds more than 40 patents worldwide, first presented the Orbitrap mass analyzer in a paper published in 2000. The Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap hybrid mass spectrometer, introduced in 2005, was the first commercial mass spectrometer to be based on this new type of mass analyzer. Orbitrap-based mass spectrometers offer performance that was previously only available from larger, more expensive, difficult-to-operate and less reliable Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers, enabling more widespread use of ultra-high resolution and high mass accuracy instrumentation.

Green Up Your Act with the New Solar Powered RainPerfect™ Water Pump
(Gloucester, MA) 01 September, 2011 - It has now never been easier to go green, with the launch of the solar powered RainPerfect™ pump from Rule Innovation, a brand from ITT Flow Control. Designed to help everyday consumers live a more environmentally conscious lifestyle, the pump enables users to more conveniently recycle rain by generating sufficient pressure to run their hose or sprinkler from their water butt. Providing added green efficiency, the water pump is powered by a unique solar panel.
“Water usage increases in the average suburban home during the summer by 30 percent from garden watering’, Jeff Schopperle, Product Manager at ITT explains. “Water harvesting provides an alternative to using water supplied from utility companies and the RainPerfect pump provides the perfect solution to make water harvesting more accessible. The pump enables people to optimize their usage of available natural resources in an easy and accessible way.”
As public awareness of the need to live environmentally conscious lifestyles increases, more people are now investing in water butts to conserve and reuse natural resources. Using the water pressure generated by the RainPerfect pump and solar panel, individuals can now recycle the rain water collected in their barrel and use it through an everyday garden hose. Providing pumping pressure of up to 0.9 bar, the pump can be used to run low pressure garden sprinklers, wash a car and water anything else around the garden.
Environmentally friendly on a second front, the RainPerfect pump is powered by a solar panel, meaning there is no need for an electrical outlet. As energy costs continue to rise, the RainPerfect pump is not only environmentally efficient but economical. The ability to use the pump without a power cable also ensures it is easy to install and use.
RainPerfect’s features include:
- Usage of a rechargeable NiMH battery, powered by the included solar panel
- Easy and quick top-mount installation, adaptable to most rain barrel styles
- Standardised garden fixturing, ensuring compatibility with all major hose brands
- Pumping up to 83 UK gallons (377 litres) on a single charge, emptying most standard barrels
RainPerfect is available online and through select retailers nationwide. RainPerfect retails for approximately £88.22 in the UK and €101.39 in Germany and France . Visit www.rainperfectpump.com for more information.
