Microsaic’s International Partner to present its new Mass Directed Flash System at JASIS 2012


Microsaic Systems plc (AIM: MSYS),  today announces that Biotage AB (Uppsala, Sweden), a leading global supplier of laboratory equipment, will be presenting its fully integrated solution for ‘Mass Directed Flash’ purification at JASIS 2012 (Japan Analytical Scientific Instruments Show) in Makuhari Messe, Japan (5-7 September). This is the first time Biotage has presented the new system, which incorporates Microsaic’s novel miniature mass spectrometer – the Microsaic MiD.

Microsaic entered an agreement in May 2012 with Biotage, previously identified in announcements as ‘an international supplier of laboratory equipment’, to provide its MiD chip-based scientific instrument as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Since then, Microsaic has further developed the MiD and the companies are at an advanced stage of integrating it with Biotage’s flagship Flash purification system Isolera™. The new integrated system is expected to be commercially available in early 2013.

Mass directed flash purification is a powerful technique for collecting compounds based on mass allowing the chemist to purify and analyse compounds at the same time.

Microsaic Systems Wins R&D 100 Award for the World’s Most Compact Mass Spectrometer

(Woking, June 21st 2012) - Microsaic Systems plc, the high technology company developing next generation mass spectrometry instruments, is proud to announce that its 3500 MiD mass spectrometer has been chosen as an R&D 100 award winner by an independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine. The award recognises the 3500 MiD as one of the most technologically significant products to enter the marketplace in 2011. Microsaic is the first and only company to have commercialised MS (mass spectrometry) technology on a chip. The instrument distinguished itself among other entries as the chips allow production of MS detectors that are smaller, lighter, consume less energy, are easier to maintain and cheaper to run than conventional MS systems. 

MS is widely accepted as one of the most reliable methods for identifying chemicals, and MS systems are used to accurately identify the chemicals that make up gaseous, liquid and solid samples.  MS is used across a range of sectors including government, energy, utilities, pharmaceuticals, environmental, food & drink, healthcare and industrial chemicals.  Although fast and sensitive, typical MS systems are large, heavy, energy intensive, expensive and complex to use, as a result, MS systems tend to be shared, central facilities. The 3500 MiD represents a step change in the ease of use and footprint of mass spectrometry.

Most revolutionary is the fact that the 3500 MiD, uniquely, is fully self contained, making it highly portable. All other commercial mass spectrometers have external vacuum pumps, which typically sit on the floor and connect to the instrument with vacuum hoses. Microsaic Systems Exhibits the World’s Smallest MS System at Analytica 2012

(Woking, March 1st 2012) Microsaic Systems plc, the high technology company developing next generation mass spectrometry instruments, is to exhibit the Microsaic 3500 MiD at Analytica 2012, Munich, 17th – 20th April 2012, Hall A2, Booth 240. Developed in collaboration with three major pharmaceutical companies, the 3500 MiD® is the world’s first chip-based mass spectrometer is an extremely robust system which is simple and intuitive to use. 90% smaller than conventional mass spectrometers and with fewer infrastructure requirements, the revolutionary Microsaic 3500 MiD is a versatile, portable solution for bench chemists in medicinal chemistry laboratories. Able to be configured and ready to use in one hour, the drastically reduced footprint and ease of use means the 3500 MiD is the ideal mass spectrometer for the modern laboratory.

Microsaic Systems has successfully transformed mass spectrometry by integrating key miniaturised components onto patented chip technologies called ionchip®, spraychip®, and vac-chip. The core technologies are chip-scale versions of traditional mass spectrometry components which can be interchanged rapidly by the user, enabling greater adaptability and speed of use. The 3500 MiD is the only MS system on the market which does not require an external vacuum pump, and is significantly smaller than legacy systems. The ability to control the 3500 MiD remotely via a LAN connection removes the need for a monitor or keyboard next to the system, further minimizing the footprint, meaning the product is small enough to sit inside a fume hood. Previously, MS had only been used for off-line analysis but with the 3500 MiD MS analysis can be now performed on-line within the fume-hood.

The 3500 MiD is designed to integrate with existing HPLC equipment with no extra footprint and no infrastructure requirements (e.g. sound proofing, A/C). Other separation methods such as Prep LC, Flash LC and SFC can also be combined with the 3500 MiD to offer mass directed purification. The ability to monitor reactions in real time provides the chemist with vital data which can be acted upon to rapidly speed up reaction optimisation, improve safety and save valuable time.

The company’s products retain the functionality of larger conventional MS systems but are considerably smaller, lighter, consume less energy and operate at only 10% of the standard running costs. The highly innovative modular approach enables users to maintain the system without the need for expensive service contracts and time consuming call outs. Users are able to increase the use of mass spectrometry in the lab while benefiting from significant cost savings owing to fewer necessary structural components such as gas generators and air conditioning.
