SmartKem Accelerates Pace in Asian Market by Signing Materials Testing Agreements with World-Renowned Asian Corporations

(17 January 2012) – SmartKem Limited, the developer of high performance, printable organic semiconductor materials for flexible electronics, today announced that it has signed materials testing agreements with a number of leading Asian companies in the chemical and electronics sectors. The agreements will see SmartKem’s innovative organic semiconductor inks tested for use in printable electronics applications for products such as state-of-the-art eReaders, Tablet PC’s, Smartphones and TV’s.

SmartKem’s products have been designed to enable the development of high performance flexible electronic devices, which can be cost effectively manufactured using low temperature printing and coating methods. The agreements demonstrate the strong market demand for these types of organic materials in the highly technological Asia region, and come following the recent appointment of SmartKem’s Japanese representative, Dr.Hirai, as well as agents in both Korea and Taiwan.

SmartKem Expands International Presence with Appointment of Japanese Representative

(9 December, 2011) – SmartKem Limited, the developer of high performance, printable organic semiconductor materials for flexible electronics, today announced the appointment of a Japanese representative, Dr. Yutaka Hirai of Business Link Japan. This partnership, combining SmartKem’s niche scientific expertise and the consultation services of Dr. Hirai, will support SmartKem’s growth in the TFT and electronics display market. The expansion will enable the company to target the complete supply chain in Japan, from chemical suppliers to printing specialists and electronics manufacturers. With a strong heritage in the development of organic semiconductor technology for TFT display applications, SmartKem will deliver customised ink formulations that are designed to enable the manufacture of lightweight, ultra-thin and rugged flat panel displays as used in smartphones, laptops, tablet PCs and TV screens.

Based in Tokyo, Japan, Dr. Hirai brings to the role extensive high level technology experience, having worked for large organizations such as Canon Inc. at senior management and Director level. Dr. Hirai has specialist expertise in semiconductor materials and devices for applications such as displays, sensors, solar cells and fuel cells. Dr. Hirai will be responsible for ensuring that SmartKem’s world class organic semiconductor materials are directed at leading Japanese organisations who are involved in the development and manufacture of flexible, lightweight and large-area printed electronics. Priority will be given to market-driven applications such as EPD, OLED and HD LCD display industries. Asia is the home of electronic device manufacturing and provides an exciting market potential for SmartKem’s technology. The appointment of a highly respected representative in Japan marks the starting point of SmartKem’s Asian strategy.

SmartKem’s Novel Organic Semiconductor Materials Achieve ‘Better Than Amorphous-Silicon’ Performance

(5 July, 2011) – SmartKem Limited, the developer of novel, printable organic semiconductor materials and ink formulations for flexible electronics announced that its advanced semiconductor materials have achieved performance “better than amorphous-silicon” in recent testing, achieving an impressive TFT mobility rating, higher than other traditional organic equivalents.

The testing was carried out by the UK’s National Printable Electronics Technology Centre (PETEC) by incorporating SmartKem’s semiconductors into flexible thin film transistor (TFT) panels and assessed performance using a range of industry standard test methods. The device preparation was performed in ambient air indicating the excellent stability of this material ink formulation.

SmartKem Receives Investment Funding To Continue Innovative Development


(April 20, 2011) - SmartKem Limited, the developer of novel, printable organic semiconductor materials and ink formulations for flexible electronics, today announced it has received investment funding from the Porton Capital Group and Finance Wales Investments Limited. The investment allows SmartKem to further develop its flexible printed electronics solutions.

Based in Denbighshire, Wales, SmartKem is a high technology enterprise delivering and generating a novel range of high mobility organic semiconductor molecules and ink formulations compatible with printed electronic processes. This is an inexpensive, low weight, low energy, alternative to silicon semiconductors and can be used to print organic circuits and devices onto thin flexible substrates such as plastics and paper.

The investment comes at a key time for SmartKem who has just completed a key R&D phase and is focusing on the formulation of innovative organic semiconductor inks for improved performance and manufacturing of printed transistor arrays and logic circuits. SmartKem's vision is to deliver world-leading printable semiconductor technology to the microelectronics industry for applications such as electronic displays, thin-film RFID, smart sensors and printed logic circuits. The funding puts SmartKem at a definitive position in the microelectronics market.
