The U.S. EPA advises water utilities to test more carefully for cancer-causing chromium VI
ITT Corporation (NYSE:ITT) announced that its WTW and OI Analytical instrument brands offer a range of measurement options for the detection of the carcinogenic hexavalent chromium (chromium VI) in drinking water supplies. ITT Analytics’ range of sophisticated technology and simple and convenient screening tests will assist U.S. water utilities to achieve fast and accurate measurement of the cancer-causing element in water while meeting EPA guidelines. ITT Analytics will showcase its range of measurement options within booth 3761 during Pittcon 2011, being held March 14-17 in Atlanta , Georgia .
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have determined that chromium VI is a carcinogen. Humans and animals exposed to chromium VI in drinking water have an increased risk of gastrointestinal tumors. A recent study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit research organization, demonstrated chromium VI in the drinking water of 31 out of 35 U.S cities tested with the highest levels in samples from Norman , Oklahoma , Honolulu , Hawaii , and Riverside , California . The U.S. EPA has advised U.S. water utilities to test more carefully for its presence in water supplies.
“ITT Analytics continues to invest in the development of innovative products and technologies and more importantly, provides the tools required to analyze the safety of our drinking water,” said Chris McIntire, president of ITT Analytics. “We make it simple for customers to comply with the current EPA regulatory standards.”
WTW products from ITT Analytics provide simple, convenient and cost effective tests for measurement of chromium VI in the field or the lab. The WTW pHotoFlex Photometer offers a simple portable lab while the pHotoLab 6100 VIS research grade spectrophotometer offers flexibility while minimizing bench space. Chemistry test kits available in a variety of sensitivity levels, all meet the current EPA chromium VI detection limits.
The OI Analytical DA 3500 discrete analyzer from ITT Analytics measures multiple analytes (e.g. chromium VI, phosphate, and nitrite) concurrently, allowing samples to be analyzed immediately upon receipt in the laboratory. This colorimetric chemistry analyzer enables drinking water facilities to analyze samples for chromium VI within 24 hours as required by the U.S. EPA.
ITT Analytics will showcase its range of measurement options for the detection of chromium in drinking water in booth 3761 at Pittcon 2011 from March 14 –17 in Atlanta, Georgia.
