Wyatt Technology’s FFF-MALS Provides Efficient Liposome Characterization

(SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA – (August 18 2011) - Wyatt Technology Corporation, the world leader in instrumentation for absolute macromolecular characterization and software, announces that its field flow fractionation (FFF) technology combined with multi-angle light scattering (MALS) and quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) enables rapid measurements of particle size, size distribution, particle count, as well as structure. The combined system performs the most difficult sizing tasks in key areas of research and development in molecular biology and nanotechnology analyses, including the separation and characterization of liposomes and nanoparticles. This novel technology is illustrated in a new application note, titled “Liposome Characterization by FFF-MALS-QELS”, which is available to download free-of charge via http://www.wyatt.com/files/literature/Field_Flow_Fractionation-Liposome_Characterization.pdf.

Liposomes are made of lipid bilayers. The size of a liposome ranges from some 20 nm up to several micrometers and may be composed of one or several concentric membranes. Liposomes possess unique properties owing to the amphiphilic character of the lipids, which make them suitable for drug delivery. Liposomes have attracted considerable attention as potential vehicles for drug delivery to selected cells or tissues in vivo. Therefore, it is of great importance to monitor liposome size and encapsulation during liposome research, formulation, manufacturing and quality control. However, conventional methods to characterize liposomes fail to perform efficiently and to cover the whole size of liposomes.

In this new application note, a method combining the Wyatt Technology Eclipse FFF system with a DAWN HELEOS and online QELS was used to analyze two liposome samples, one empty, and one filled. The results demonstrated that the combined method is capable of determining the degrees of encapsulation and the internal structures of the two liposomes without making assumptions.

The FFF system offers a number of distinct advantages over column separation techniques for many applications. The method is robust and easy to use, involving minimal shearing and enabling a broad separation range, from small proteins (nm) to large particles (µm). FFF is a non-destructive technique that achieves true particle size distribution and on-line absolute characterization of a wide range of solutions and dispersions. Combined with MALS detectors, the method can determine the absolute size and molar mass distributions as well as the structure and conformation of the particles.

Hello, The Scott Partnership!

I’m Lucy and I am currently in my third week of work at The Scott Partnership.  I’m here for a year on an internship after graduating in Public Relations from the University of Central Lancashire, Preston.

Although I am still getting used to setting my alarm for 7am every morning, I have to say that I am really enjoying adapting to working life.  The team here have made fitting in a breeze and have been extremely accommodating and willing to help.  I decided to take part in an internship as I feel they are a great way to get into the industry you want to be in and learn loads of useful stuff along the way.  After all, experience is one of the most essential attributes which employers in the PR industry look for.

With parts of experience within the industry here and there I can’t pretend to be an expert, However, my first few weeks here have taught me a considerable amount about how PR agencies operate, most of which I was not told in my 3 years at university! Everything from looking for and clipping coverage, posting press releases online, reaching out to editors, writing articles, researching for new clients, proof reading articles and keeping up with the company’s social media sites are included in my day to day responsibilities. That rains on whoever said interns only make the tea and coffee!

The rate in which the company is growing at a time of economic downturn makes me proud to have secured an internship here and to be able to work with a friendly, professional and experienced team. I know this year will teach me a lot and give me the experience and knowledge I need to fulfil a career within the PR industry.  The only downside is the fact I have to go for longer runs every weekend to burn off all the tea and biscuits we consume in the week- putting on a stone wasn’t in the job description!

Goodbye Internship

By Adam Gron, Public Relations Intern, The Scott Partnership

Right… There is no easy way to start with this reflective post so I’ll just do it: big thanks to all of you!

A few things I’ve learned during this crazy journey through the unexplored shores of PR practice at The Scott Partnership:

One: Be enthusiastic.

Two: If you are unsure about something you have to do (or feel totally lost like me during my first days) ask questions! Nothing questioned, nothing learned!

And three: Respect the people you work with. They’re the people that motivate and inspire you. At The Scott Partnership there is something about the team that has always encouraged me to run faster, work harder and face down my fears when I had to move out of the comfort zone. And that is, without doubt, the best way to learn.

But first, a little bit of background…

Manchester-based Analytical Technology Achieves Record Turnover as Water Industry Thrives

Manchester, UK (July 28, 2011) Specialist electrochemical sensor manufacturer Analytical Technology Inc. today announces that the company has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1998, culminating in a record month for the business in June 2011. This spectacular achievement demonstrates the buoyancy of the current market for water monitoring instrumentation, despite the present economic recession. It is also a demonstration of the ongoing and imperative need for reliable water monitoring in the water utility industry to ensure a safe and continuous supply of water.

This year Manchester-based Analytical Technology has had its strongest first half ever and this culminated in June sales being the highest on record. A large component of the June sales, which peaked at £1.2 million for the month, can be credited to the recent contract signed by Analytical Technology with Severn Trent Water, involving the purchase of 250 Analytical Technology residual chlorine monitors in June alone. Analytical Technology is also supplying Yorkshire Water with more than 450 chlorine monitors and has enjoyed repeated success in recent years, providing instrumentation to other major utility companies such as United Utilities, Scottish Water, Thames Water, Anglian Water and South West Water.
